Kinship Care Program
Serving Prince George’s County, Maryland
Keeping kids out of the system and with family who knows and loves them.Â
Our Kinship Care Program Team is Here to Help!
With funding by and in partnership with the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services, PLC provides invaluable support to our county’s kinship caregivers.
When a family member steps in to raise a child because the biological parents are unwilling or unable, this is called kinship care. Kinship care keeps a child out of foster care, in a familiar environment, and with someone they love and who loves them back. But when a family member suddenly becomes a primary caregiver, there is so much to figure out. PLC’s unique Kinship Care Program is a virtual and in-home visiting program, through which we help caregivers navigate and succeed in their new role. We provide case management, community linkages and welcomed emotional support, helping to set kinship caregivers up for success.
Spiritually- and Culturally-focused Case Management
Through regular weekly home visits and 24 /7 availability, your case manager will help you find your way by:
- providing mental health support,
- supporting goal setting and achievement,
- helping to improve family communication,
- making referrals and connections to services,
- supporting communication with schools,
- identifying and hosting family activities,
and because every family is different, your case manager will work with you and your family to understand your unique needs to provide customized support.
To train and empower families to tap their inner strengths and abilities and to advocate for and enhance the family unit through the use of natural and community resources.
Program referrals are easy and there are many ways to connect to our services. You can even refer yourself. We also receive referrals from the County’s Department of Social Services (DSS), Department of Family Services (DFS), Office on Aging, Prince George’s County Public Schools, and other organizations serving children, youth and families. Families who have participated in PLC’s Kinship Care Supports are better equipped to continue raising children in their care if the biological parents are unwilling or unable due to addiction, domestic violence, incarceration, unemployment, illness or other crises.
